# PROTEST THE WAR OF TERROR IN THE PHILIPPINES
4 PM FRI MAY 20 PHILIPPINE CONSULATE 447 SUTTER (AT POWELL) SF, CA
In full support of the US war on terror, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) has declared war on all people who are critical of her government.  Community organizers, mass leaders, striking peasants and workers are being harassed, disappeared, killed.  Entire communities are being terrorized.
11 GABRIELA and GABRIELA Women's Partylist members killed since GMA took office.
32 political killings, 6 activists disappeared in the first quarter of 2005.
at least 300 political killings and abductions since 2001.
100 cases of human rights violations, affecting 23,252 victims in 91 communities, from January to March 15, 2005.
13 journalists killed last year;  3 in the first quarter of 2005.  According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Philippines is "the most murderous country" in the entire world for the media, no longer second to Iraq as reported by international associations for journalists earlier this year.

# A Retrospective on the Black Panther Party Fri May 20 5PM
A Retrospective on the Black Panther Party
From the Archives of Alden and Mary Kimbrough Event Poster:
http://www.rossforsupervisor.org/img/original/BlackPower.jpg
San Francisco City Hall, Room 282
 Exhibit : May 20 through June 13, 2005
 Opening reception : Friday May 20, 5-8pm
The event is free and everyone is invited.

Paul Robeson scholar and archivist Alden Kimbrough and Mary Kimbrough are
pleased to exhibit selected pieces from their collection of Black Panther
artifacts, including posters, photographs, newspaper articles, drawings,
and the original art of Emory Douglas.

After seeing more extensive Black Panther exhibit last year at the African
American Art & Culture Complex, Supervisor Mirkarimi was inspired to
display the images in his own offices at City Hall, and wholeheartedly
agrees with archivist Kimbrough, who writes:

"There is almost an entire generation of young people and students who do
not recognize images of Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, Huey P. Newton,
Angela Davis, Amiri Baraka, Kathleen Cleaver, George Jackson . . . these
heroes who epitomized resistance in the 1960's and 1970's.?€?

"This art is in truth, art as propaganda, it is art to create and sustain
our national heroes, to glorify historical and contemporary events. It is
art to dignify a people, and perhaps more important, to serve as a catalyst
for action, to motivate people to take a stand against racism, imperialism
and police brutality . . ."

PEACE ONE DAY -80 minutes documentary
is the story of one man’s attempts to persuade the global community via the United Nations to officially sanction a global ceasefire day; a day of non-violence; a day of Peace.
This documentary charts the remarkable 5-year journey of the filmmaker as he meets heads of state, Noble Peace Laureates, aid agencies, freedom fighters, media moguls, the innocent victims of war and, eventually, everyone who was anyone at the UN.
An individual genuinely can make a difference: The UN International Day of Peace is now fixed in the calendar on 21st September annually. The real challenge has now begun - to get the world to unite on a day fast approaching.

# **Film Premiere** INSIDE IRAQ: THE UNTOLD STORIES
Friday, May 20 2005 - Thursday, May 26 7:00 PM
Galaxy Theater Van Ness @ Sutter Street Downtown / Civic Center
Inside Iraq: The Untold Stories will have its San Francisco premiere May 20th to May 26th with showings at 1, 4, 7, and 9:30pm daily at Regal's Galaxy Theater at 1285 Sutter Street.

Armed only with a video camera, a press pass made at Kinko's, and a single name written on a crumpled up piece of paper, filmmaker, Mike Shiley, cashed in airline miles and flew to Amman, Jordan where he entered Iraq as a freelance journalist on assignment for KATU-ABC TV in Portland, OR.

Mike traveled through the country for two months with only a local guide, chronicling the life of the Iraqi people and the US military. He filmed unique stories the national media ignores: gun markets, bomb shelters, mine fields, hospitals, schools, and villages showing the reality of life in Iraq beyond the media spin.

While embedded with the US military, he actually joined a combat unit and qualified as a gunner on an Abrams tank and went out on live-fire night patrols along the Syrian border.

Director, Mike Shiley, will be at every showing Friday through Sunday to introduce the film, meet the audience and answer questions.

This film had a very successful one-month run in Portland and it has been shown over 122 times at colleges and performing arts centers in 25 states around the US since October 2004.

# Proctor & Gamble Global Day of Action http://idausa.org

IDA has been boycotting Procter & Gamble (P&G) since 1989 because they
blind, burn, maim and kill thousands of animals each year in product
tests that are cruel, outdated and not required by law. While P&G
claims to lead the industry in developing alternatives to animal
testing, they continue to test products on animals even while hundreds
of other companies have stopped.

IDA sponsors a Global Day of Action Against P&G each year to focus
attention on their cruelty and hypocrisy. Last year over 140 boycott
P&G events took place all over the world - from Auckland to Aberdeen -
making it one of the largest days of action of its kind in the world.
This year's event takes place on Saturday, May 21st, and we hope
you'll join us by organizing or participating in an event.

There are plenty of ways to get involved, from staging a protest
outside of a P&G facility or a store that sells P&G products to
organizing a P&G product return in your community. Contact IDA at
(415) 388-9641 or ida@idausa.org for brochures and other materials to
distribute. For information about how P&G tortures animals and more
ways that you can make a difference, visit

# Bike Carnival at the Bike Kitchen Sat May 21 11:00AM to 5:00pm Free
Come help us celebrate the Bike Kitchen's two-year anniversary. Last year's party was a success, but this year's will be even bigger and crazier. All ages are welcome to compete in our bike challenges, everything from the Slow Race to the Tube Patch King to the Huffy Toss. Cyclecide will of course be there with a bicycle-powered ferrris wheel and other extra-terrestrial contraptions, and we'll also be offering bicycle blended smoothies. The event kicks off at 11AM with a Bike Parade, so decorate your bike, bring the kids, and come on down.
Lastly, the fanciest and most high profile event of the day will be the HOMESTYLE BIKE COMPETITION. We have a panel of judges made up of some of the brightest Bay Area bike luminaries. So bring your fanciest, nuttiest or classiest homestyle bike and your could win our grand prize: $100 cash. And of course it wouldn't be a party without a barbecue, music, and a raffle for wonderful bike prizes.

# Saturday, May 21, the Bay Area Vegetarians will host 3 back-to-back fun and important SF events:  KFC protest, Shangri-La lunch, Red Vic letter writing party with a presentation by Nora on effective letter writing.  You're welcome to come to one, a combination, or all of them.

From 12 noon to 1 pm, we'll protest at KFC, 1900 Irving St (at 18th/19th Ave).  Make a statement for the chickens and against KFC's cruelty!  Here's the link to this event:

http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.php?EID=672#672

From 1:15 to 2:30 pm, we'll have lunch at Shangri-La (right down the street from the KFC), at 2026 Irving St (at 21st Ave).  Shangri-La is a delicious, healthy, and reasonably priced all vegetarian, almost all vegan Chinese restaurant.  Here's the link to this event:

http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.php?EID=625#625

And here's the BAV Ultimate Guide link for Shangri-La:

http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=1

From 3 - 5 pm, we'll have the letter writing party at the Red Vic (which is easy to get to on public transportation from Shangri-La, and folks are welcome to head over with me).  At the letter writing parties, we write letters to politicians and businesses on a variety of issues related to animals.  The link to the letter writing party, which describes it and how to get to the Red Vic, is here: Event location: Red Victorian Peace Center, 1665 Haight Street, corner of Cole. SF

http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.php?EID=774#774

Also, from 3 - 3:30, Nora will be doing a mini-workshop on letter writing at the Red Vic.  Nora's had letters published in leading national newspapers and magazines, and this is a great opportunity for people who want to speak up for animals, but would appreciate some guidance from someone experienced in writing letters.  Nora will also stick around and be available to answer questions for the rest of the letter writing party.  Here's the link about Nora's presentation:

# KFC demos in San Francisco May 21st Hey Everyone,

We need your help to speak on behalf of chickens being tortured by KFC!

On Saturday, May 21st at 12:00 noon, please join Gail Camhi and PETA to protest KFC at Geary Blvd and 6th Ave. For more information, please contact Gail at gailcamhi24@aol.com. Or, join Bay Area Vegetarians to protest the KFC at 1900 Irving Street in San Francisco, CA. This one takes place at 12:00 noon as well. Please visit http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.php?EID=672#672 for more info. Come out and show people that the secret in KFC's secret recipe is the torture of millions of chickens.

KFC is responsible for slitting conscious birds' throats open, and scalding them while they're still alive. They cut the beaks off of mother hens without pain killers and drug their chickens with antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions that would otherwise kill them. Please join our worldwide campaign against KFC by attending this protest.

You can visit http://www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com for more information.

Thanks for all of your help! For Animal Rights, Joe

# Pirate Radio Workshop - we want the airwaves! Sat May 21 2 - 4PM
 free; suggested donation of $5 - 25
 We want the airwaves!!!!!
Pirate Radio Workshop with Jean Chen and Karoline Hatch

As part of the programming around our Pirated
http://www.kearnystreet.org/programs/special/pirated/index.html exhibition, KSW presents a workshop all about pirate radio. Learn all about the how-to's, what-if's, and watch-out's of pirate radio.

Do you hate listening to the radio because everything is owned by Clear Channel? Do you ever wonder what happened to the days when the radio played good music?

Three years ago Jean Chen got tired of hearing the same 10 songs on the radio over and over again and decided to take action. She bought a radio transmitter and began to broadcast her own radio station out of her apartment.

Karoline Hatch has been a primary organizer for San Francisco Liberation Radio (listen online: www.liberationradio.net) for 3 years and as such she has learned more than she ever wanted to know about the legal and illegal issues of micro-powered radio and raids, as well as what to do and not to do with electricity and transmission equipment. She finds radio compelling because while it is intrinsically an act of civil disobedience it can be some serious fun.

Join Jean and Karoline as they tell you about their experiences and give advice on how to start up your own pirate radio station. You'll hear about what equipment you need, legal issues to consider, and the state of low power FM.

# HIPS: Photos from Burning Man Sat May 21 4 - 8 pm free

The human hip may be a marvel of engineering, but in the eyes of photographer Patrick Roddie it's a way to capture a bit of the wild, exotic spirit of Burning Man, the annual arts festival held in the Nevada desert. STUDIO Gallery is happy to present a show of photographs by Roddie from his new book HIPS, just published by Chronicle Books. The show runs from May 18th to May 22nd; dozens of Roddie's photos will be on display in the gallery, including some hips not included in the book.

The book contains 250 different photographs of the same subject-the right hip of someone attending the Burning Man festival-but each one is a riot of color, adornment and individuality. Roddie has been attending Burning Man for years, taking photographs and enjoying the celebration. He writes, "In 2001, while photographing a woman in a lime-green Tinkerbell dress, I stumbled upon what I recognized as a powerful, yet beautiful composition-her right hiphellipsixteen hundred hips later, I felt I probably had enough for a book."

Each photo is spontaneous: Roddie shoots his subjects where he finds them, lit only by the scorching desert sun. He doesn't retouch the photos, doesn't crop them, doesn't even use a tripod. "Everyone's got a belly button and a right hand-those are my reference points." The consistency of the composition allows you to focus on the subjects themselves, and how each has chosen to decorate his or her body: everything from silver body paint to chain mail, from fully clothed to buck-naked. The resulting photographs and book provide a peek into one of the most eclectic art festivals around. And after photographing so many belly buttons, does Roddie prefer innies or outies? "I like them all," he says.

HIPS runs from May 18 - May 22, 2005. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, May 21st, 4 - 8 pm; Roddie will speak and sign books and photographs. STUDIO Gallery is located at 1718A Polk Street (between Clay and Washington) in San Francisco. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Friday 11 am - 8 pm, Saturday + Sunday 11 am - 6 pm, and Monday + Tuesday by appointment.

In some cases, the photographs will be from many years ago. In other cases, the item to be found will be described in text. All items to be found are visible from public streets in an area bounded by 15th, 22nd, Mission and Church. The alleys will receive special emphasis.
You can play individually or as part of a team.
There are no prizes other than an afternoon spent exploring a neighborhood.
For those who just want to take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood alleys with some stops at points of historical interest, show up at the statue at 1:30 pm. We will leave at 2:00 pm to walk a route where all the items can be found. Expect the walk to take about two hours.
Rain postpones the event. If it rains on May 22, we will reschedule for June.
Meeting Time: 12:00 (noon) for serious hunters
1:30 pm for leisurely strollers (and cheaters)

# Grinberg Method Intro Lecture Sun May 22, 7p.m.
You are invited to a very interesting evening about the Grinberg Method.
The Grinberg Method aims to enable us to make changes in our life, which results in fuller and happier life, by learning how to pay attention to our bodies and stop automatic patterns that are physical, emotional, and mental.
We will begin with a short introduction its principal ideas:  Whatever happens to us - happens in and through our bodies.
Then we’ll continue to talk about foot analysis, a means by which we see one’s life patterns caused by past experience, and how these patters affect the body.
For desert, we will demonstrate how bodywork using the Grinberg Method can change those patterns….
We will also have time for question and answers.
If you would like to read about the Grinberg Method, here’s a link with a paper I wrote:
http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Ron5.html
Please R.S.V.P., since we have limited space.
We’ll be waiting for you this coming Sunday,

# RAWdance presents Scripting Intimacies at the Center for Sex & Culture May 23-25, 2005 Gallery @ 7:30 Performance @ 8:00 $5-15 Sliding Scale 398 11th St @ Harrison Contact: raw@rawdance.org, 415.686.0728 Throughout history, the human body has been scienced, looked at through a medical lens to derive narratives of our sexual histories and to create maps of our sexuality.  Drawing on the history of sexology, Scripting Intimacies explores how definitions imposed on our physical and sexual identities impact our self-perception and our intimate relationships.  With a mixture of text, dynamic movement, and intricate partnering, the performance by RAWdance is set amidst an installation of original photography by queer photographer and collaborator Shawn Tamaribuchi.   Founded in 2004 by Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein, RAWdance aims to explore the power and vulnerability of the human body through driven, visceral movement.  Scripting Intimacies was developed in part through an AIRSpace residency at the Jons Sims Center for the Arts. http://www.sexandculture.org

# URGENT * MUNI ACTION TUESDAY!!!!
Tuesday, May 24, we will hold a rally and press conference at 1:15 on the steps of City Hall.

The Board of Supervisors will be voting on the proposed $4.6 million give-away to illegal parkers and car drivers. This money could go towards stopping fee hikes and service cuts * but only if we're there to let them know transit riders are organized and demand that the money be spent otherwise.

Following the rally/press conference, at which Chris Daly, Ross Mirkarimi, Tom Ammiano and others will be speaking, we'll be heading into the Board meeting together to testify that fee hikes and service cuts are the most important priority for this city.

We're thinking about chartering a bus to pick people up. Please let me know if that would help in your outreach efforts, and I'll keep you all updated on getting it.

Attached is a flier. Please distribute it far and wide, and do as much outreach as you're able to - any help we could get on Spanish and Cantonese translations for the fliers would be much appreciated.

I think this can be a great event, our best yet at one of the most crucial moments we've faced. We're so close to getting what we want * let's make it happen!!!

Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or help you may need with outreach.

No Logo: Brands, Globalization & Resistance- Documentary 42 min
In the age of the brand, logos are everywhere. But why do some of the world’s best-known brands find themselves on the wrong end of the spray paint can – the targets of anti-corporate campaigns by activists and prote stors? No Logo, based on the best-selling book by Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein, reveals the reasons behind the backlash against the increasing economic and cultural reach of multinational companies. Analyzing how brands like Nike,The Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger became revered symbols worldwide, Klein argues that globalization is a process whereby corporations discovered that profits lay not in making products (outsourced to low-wage workers in developing countries), but in creating branded identities people adopt in their lifestyles. Using hundreds of media examples, No Logo shows how the commercial takeover of public space, destruction of consumer choice, and replacement of real jobs with temporary work – the dynamics of corporate globalization – impact everyone, everywhere. It also draws attention to the democratic resistance arising globally to challenge the hegemony of brands.
Money for Nothing: Behind the Business of Pop Music –Documentary 44 min
Of all mass cultural forms, popular music has historically been characterized by the greatest independence for artists and allowing access to a broader diversity of voices. However, in the contemporary period, this independence is being threatened by a shrinking number of record companies, the centralization of radio ownership and playlists, and the increasing integration of popular music into the broader advertising and commercial aspects of the market.
Narrated by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Money for Nothing features interviews with hip-hop legend and pioneer Chuck D, respected independent artist Ani DiFranco, Michael Franti of Spearhead, and Riot Grrrl co-founder Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre). It also includes interviews with popular music historian Professor Reebee Garafolo, ex-Rolling Stone editor Dave Marsh, political economist Robert W. McChesney, and Shirley Halperin, editor of BOP magazine.

Friday-May 27th
The World According to Bush- Documentary 91 min
a two-hour documentary about the inner-workings of the Bush administration, will alarm even the most hardened Washington-watchers.
Who are the Bushes? Apparently, they're the "quiet dynasty" of modern America-but in reality, their "dynasty" is one of inconceivable family secrets, painstakingly concealed. The current president's grandfather, Prescott Bush, made his fortune by managing Nazi companies after Hitler seized power. In 1942, his companies were confiscated for collaboration with the enemy. George Bush Sr., president from 1988 to 1992, armed and financed Saddam Hussein. He approved the shipping of germ warfare strains to Iraq, enabling the country to launch a chemical attack against Iranian troops and the Kurdish population.
The World According to Bush aims to show how the Bushes, father and son, have not only dined with the devil, but have often invit ed themselves to his table. The bin Ladens and the Bushes have been longtime business partners, and the family of the future terrorist chief indirectly financed George W. Bush's political career. This unnatural alliance has continued since the Sept. 11 attacks: Bush Sr. is a top official in one of the biggest private investment funds in the USA, Carlyle, a group that has invested heavily in the arms industry. The Bradley tanks and the missiles used in the latest war against Iraq are made by firms controlled by Carlyle…'and the bin Ladens. For the latter are Bush's associates within this investment fund.

A Dept. of Peace . . . an idea whose time has come!

Now, more than ever, is a critical time to create a powerful citizen's peace campaign. So, come join us in this historic opportunity to establish a U.S. Department of Peace thus installing a cabinet-level Secretary of Peace. The purpose of the Dept. of Peace would be to research, facilitate and articulate non-violent solutions to domestic and international conflicts, making non-violence an organizing principle of American society By understanding and addressing the root causes of violence, we can predict and ameliorate a myriad of hostilities, improve national security, help protect human rights, and prevent and de-escalate armed international conflict. Not only will the Dept. of Peace implement strong policy, but it will save the American tax payer billions of dollars, as well. This is a nonpartisan campaign engaged in shifting our national focus away from violence and war. The Dept. of Peace is an idea whose time has come, and will become a legislative reality when each of joins in making it happen!

o     Who do you want to manage your $Money … you or someone else?
o     Would you want to find out where the $Money is?
o     How do I want my $Money to grow, by addition or multiplication?

 : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :     : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
Hi…Can you come Wednesday night?
Why am I so excited about this? Because of several factors, among which include:
 1.     It's the trading rage in Europe and Asia. Foreign Currency Trading is just hitting the market in the US as a viable way to make money.
 2.     This company makes it easy to learn this money approach. The software program is an “elegant” program, and the market is shown in graphs and charts, not just numbers.
 3.     You are supported in your trading, with real-time chat rooms, ongoing training opportunities, local teams and groups gathered around trading, so that you learn faster.
 4.     The market is measured in pips. Up until two years ago, there wasn't a day of 100 pips. This year, 2-3 times per week, and sometimes more often, there are 100 pip spreads. Analysts are expecting the market to expand in the next 2-3 years to have as much as much as 300-600 pips spreads happening.
 5.     It's a market you can trust… at least more than stocks. Stocks are traded at $28 billion a day. The Forex market trades $1.9 Trillion a DAY!

Please come and check it out. Add to your level of financial education. You're welcomed to invite friends to join you for this informative evening. If you're interested and can't make this meeting, please let me know so I can put you on a special list for the next gathering, or set up a private appointment to introduce it to you.

 Cheers! Teri Bigio TeriBigio@aol.com 415.203.3323

Celebrating Water Democracy
Community Speak-out for a Global Treaty on the Human Right to Water

United Nations World Environment Day 2005
June 2nd, 2005, 2:30- 4:30PM @ The Metreon, San Francisco

From Bolivia to Bayview-Hunter's Point, from Ghana to Alpaugh in
California's Central Valley, communities are organizing for the right to
safe and affordable water. This basic human right is being threatened by
privatization, pollution, industrial agriculture and environmental
racism, among many other injustices.

Celebrating Water Democracy! seeks to advance World Environment Day
2005 Accord Goal 7 on water, particularly Action 21, by creating a space
for open and critical dialogue that encourages collaborative
partnerships among those who are working to ensure the right to clean
and affordable water. This event will promote participatory and
environmentally sustainable models of water management as well as
highlight innovative community-led public partnerships.

Community representatives will provide testimony to a panel of water
rights experts in support of a new global initiative calling for a UN
Convention on the Right to Water. This legally-binding framework
promoting the human right to water would take precedence over
international trade laws that grant corporations rights to commodify and
privatize water/water utilities. It would also give communities a
powerful tool to hold their governments accountable for providing safe
water for all. For more information on this global effort please see
http://www.bluewaterproject.org and http://www.wateractivist.org

COLLABORATING ORGANIZATIONS: Public Citizen's Water for All, Ghana
National Coalition Against Privatization of Water, International Working
Group on the Convention on the Right to Water, Communities for A Better
Alpaugh, African International Mission, Hesperian Foundation, Ella Baker
Center for Human Rights, Women of Africa, Alliance for Democracy,

# BURNING RIVER – June 25 & 26
Saturday & Sunday, 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River
Can you imagine 100+ Burners on a fabulous, hot, sunny day on the river?  We can dress in crazy attire, have water battles (Super Soakers are a must), chill out on the beaches and just enjoy being in a wet, tree-lined environment with amazing scenery right before our eyes.  Once you are on the river, there is nothing to do but have fun and relax.  All meals are taken care of and all gear is sent ahead.  The most you have to worry about is loosing your paddle and having to swim.
At night, we can put on the Bling!Bling!, light up our e-poi/e-staffs while dazzling the natives by the river's edge.  With a little coordination, we could set up our own cozy village with a community bar among the trees and deeply connect with one another.
If we get enough interest, we may be able to take over one campsite for ourselves (run the music, stay up all night, etc.) and have leverage to book a campground on the way for the preceding Friday night stay or perhaps negotiate discount rooms at the local casino for Friday night.  Stay tuned for these opportunities…
This is an all-inclusive, family-oriented (12 yrs +/min. 65 lbs.) event so we encourage you to bring the whole Burner family and to post this announcement out to other Burner communities.  The company running it has Burners on the payroll but the guests will be a mix of Burners and non-Burners – our goal is to make it mostly Burners!
The scheduled trip includes 2 days of volcanic river canyon rafting (rated class 3 but is mostly class 2) in either a 2 person 'ducky' or a 4 persons raft.  The $139 pp fee includes all on-river meals and evening entertainment, life jacket, camping fees, parking, raft rental, paddles and shuttle service.  There will be some free tickets for those in our community who cannot afford this adventure but passionately want to attend.
2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River.
